In our first post we referred to John Maxwell’s definition of Leadership – “Leadership is influence – nothing more, nothing less”. We like this definition of leadership as it provides an important insight into the very essence of leadership. Often people see leadership as a position to be attained or a title to gain. This can lead to a form of leadership often known as ‘positional’ leadership where a person seeks to exert influence over other people by virtue of their position or title. Whilst people may respond to this out of obligation, it will tend to create a culture of fear and stifle ownership, initiative and creativity. It will be difficult for the leader to develop his/her team to their maximum potential whilst implementing this style of leadership and ultimately they will find that people will only follow them for so long before looking for someone they really ‘want’ to follow.

In order to become more effective leaders we need to understand that we can only do this through relationship, example and inspiration. When people know that we care about them, can see us as an example and they are encourage then not only will they want to follow you but you will also draw out their full potential.

These are key areas that we will continue to develop in future posts.

Welcome to our new blog where we will be addressing everything about leadership. John Maxwell once said “Leadership is influence – nothing more, nothing less”. Whether you’re the CEO of a large organisation or a mother of two, we all have influence over others and therefore leadership skills play a vital part in our lives. In this blog we hope to help you develop your own personal leadership skills, as well as helping you develop those people who you have influence over.

As we progress through the weeks we will give you lots of very useful insights through the blog, such as: Illustrations, commentary on world events, life experiences, quotes and observations from our own personal journeys. On top of this we will also bring resource recommendations from leaders who have impacted our lives either through their own example or through their publications.

We also want to encourage you all to comment on our blog with your own experiences or any insights that you may have. Leadership can be expressed in many different ways by different people and so we hope to create an environment where you can share through what has worked for you and enable others to benefit from that.

We hope that you will find this blog a valuable tool in your own personal leadership journey and development.
